Students of all ages will benefit from Kentucky’s impressive educational opportunities. School age
children can attend one of over 1,200 public schools across 175 districts. Students also have the
choice of attending private schools, or being home-schooled.
Kentucky prides itself on its higher education institutions. The University of Kentucky in Lexington enrolls over 20,000 students, and offers 88
certified programs leading to bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees in 93 fields, and doctoral
degrees in 60 programs. The University of
Louisville, established in 1798, is Kentucky’s premier, nationally recognized metropolitan
research university, with over 20,000 enrolled students. Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond is a comprehensive university offering
168 degree programs and serving over 15,000 students annually. Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights is a four year public university
in close proximity to Cincinnati, Ohio, enrolling approximately 14,000 students and offering 60
bachelor’s, 12 associate, and 12 graduate degree programs. Morehead State University in Morehead enrolls over 9,000 students and offers
regional campuses in Ashland, Jackson, Mount Sterling, Prestonsburg, and West Liberty, with a global
presence online. Kentucky State University in
Frankfort boasts an African-American heritage and emphasizes liberal studies as well as public service
commitments. Murray State University in
Murray is home to over 10,000 students. Western Kentucky
University in Bowling Green offers 88 academic majors, and 18 associate degree programs.
In addition to its public universities, the Bluegrass State offers many fine private institutions.
Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes is a private,
four-year liberal arts institution dedicated to providing leadership education for students in the
Appalachian region. Berea College in Berea was
founded in 1855 as the first interracial and co-educational college in the South, and follows a
Christian tradition. Berea College is also known for providing an excellent education to students
with limited economic resources. Other renowned private colleges include Centre College in Danville; Transylvania
University in Lexington, one of the nation’s oldest colleges; Kentucky
Wesleyan College in Owensboro; Spalding
University in Louisville; and Kentucky Christian
University in Grayson; among many others.
Kentucky provides impressive community colleges as part of its educational repertoire. The
Kentucky Community and Technical College System is
made of over 65 campuses and other locations, and allows students to move easily among programs and
institutions; over 81,000 students are enrolled in the system.
