Kentucky’s location in the mid-southeastern U.S. places it in close proximity to major transportation
hubs. Highway travel is the chief mode of transportation in the Bluegrass State. Five major
Interstate highways cross the state, including the east-west I-24 and I-64; north-south Interstates
include I-65, I-71, and I-75. There are also 20 U.S. highway routes traversing the state, along with
numerous state and local highways.
Major airports within Kentucky include the Cincinnati/Northern
Kentucky International Airport (CVG), which served over 16 million passengers in 2006; Louisville International Airport (SDF), with over 3.6 million passengers served;
Blue Grass Airport in Lexington; and
many other regional and smaller airports. Kentucky has 61 public-use airports, 84 private airports,
and 53 heliports.
Rail service in Kentucky is possible via Amtrak
via the City of New Orleans route, with a stop in Fulton. The Big South Fork Scenic Railway offers a 16 mile (25.7 kilometer) pleasure trip on
the 100 year old Kentucky & Tennessee Railway, and passes through the scenic Daniel Boone National Forest and Big
South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
Some areas of Kentucky offer public transit options for commuters. The Lexington Transit Authority (LexTran) is Lexington’s public transportation system,
and operates a fleet of 58 buses and additional university and paratransit services. The
Transit Authority of River City (TARC) is the
major public transit provider for Jefferson, Oldham, and Bullitt Counties, and also includes two
counties in Indiana. The Transit Authority of Northern
Kentucky (TANK) provides transit services to Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties as well as
downtown Cincinnati, Ohio; TANK operates 27 routes.
Intercity bus service is provided by Greyhound,
with many stops throughout the Bluegrass State.
